In June 1941 several developments meant nothing short of fantastic news for Gen. Erwin Rommel. The forty-nine-year-old German general, at the time Hitler's favorite commander, had just read a decoded message in his command car in Libya sent from the American military attache in Cairo, Col. Bonner Fellers, to Washington D.C. Earlier the Germans had cracked the Black Code used by Americans in several of their embassies throughout the world. The intelligence takes for the Germans had proven very useful. Regrettably, Gen. Archibald Wavell, the British commander in the Middle East, was not aware of his enemy's success with the Black Code.
