The Defense Base Realignment and Closing Commission voted last week to close historic Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington, and Wilford Hall Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, Texas, but decided to spare two hospitals in Mississippi and Kentucky.
Not slated for closure as recommended to the commission are 95-bed Keesler Medical Center, Biloxi, Miss., and 29-bed Ireland Army Community Hospital, Fort Knox, Ky.
And Brooks City-Base, San Antonio, which is home to the U.S. Air Force School of Aerospace Medicine, would be closed, with operations transferred to Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio.
