THERE was the personal tragedy, somehow always seen in the gentle smile of the physicist born in a land of sorrow, who had inadvertently given his genius to the development of the most malignant force known to man, before becoming one of the most persuasive opponents of its use.

And so the man, who helped make the atomic bomb, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1995.

The irony dwelt deep in Joseph Rotblat, who, more than almost any other figure of the 20th century, could claim to be a victim of history.
