The best songs, Johnny Haws always said, have yet to be written.
So he did everything possible to make sure that the next Cole Porter or Leonard Bernstein could create beautiful music. For 55 years, he sold instruments - especially Steinway pianos - at Wells Music Co. And every morning and every evening for 35 years, he gave music lessons in his north Denver home.
The rest of the time, Mr. Haws played the saxophone, flute or clarinet for the sheer joy of it.
"The only thing you get to keep in this life," Mr. Haws used to say, "is what you give away."
He died Aug. 28 at the age of 88.
