This CD was made from an interview Alan Lomax conducted in 1946 with Big Bill Broonzy, Memphis Slim and John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson. Snatches of music have been interspersed, some from field recordings and some by the interviewees, intended to illustrate the points the artists are making. The CD booklet is a reprint of most of chapter 1 of Lomax's Land Where the Blues Began (Pantheon Books, New York City, 1993), less the material concerning Forrest City Joe Pugh.
