Native American babies' development is normal--despite increased risks.

Despite fears about how high poverty and inadequate prenatal care affects Native babies, new research shows Native American and Alaska Native infants to be developing on par with their non-Native peers.

At nine months old, Native children are similar to the general population in developmental skills, including exploring objects in play, eye-hand coordination, pre-walking skills and "babbling"--or early talking, according to the study released this month by the National Center for Education Statistics. The research found:

* 87 percent of Native nine-month-olds were exploring objects with a purpose, compared with 88 percent in the general population;
