On the beet: sugar beet growers are concerned about proposals to reform the EU sugar regime.

Last month, UK sugar beet growers converged on Brussels to protest about proposals to reform the EU sugar regime. The reason? It is the most profitable arable crop that can be grown in the UK and the EU wants to bring it in line with the rest of the CAP, which means a price cut and any support given as an area payment.

At present, quota is keeping the price of sugar beet artificially high--more than double the true global market price--which economist Sean Rickard, of Cranfield School of Management, says is actually a 'backdoor' subsidy

Under the proposals a sugar quota will remain, but farmers are to be paid a much lower price for which they will receive compensation ...
