The incomprehensible destruction wrought by Hurricane Katrina is bringing out the best and worst in Americans. The generosity of initial donations and the heroism of rescuers are heartening signs that victims can count on their fellow citizens for help recovering from one of the deadliest and most expensive natural disasters in U.S. history.
