Sep. 8--Eager to get back on its feet, the battered Port of New Orleans expects to begin moving barges as early as Friday and working with ships by next week, a top port official said Wednesday.

Though the port's facilities suffered various levels of damage, "by and large, we are operational," said Paul Zimmermann, the port's director of operations.

Whether Hurricane Katrina will inflict long-term damage on the port remains to be seen.

For now, many shippers are closely monitoring the situation. Some have rerouted cargo to other ports in Louisiana and Texas, including Houston.
