The East Syracuse fire station now has a dorm room.
The smaller of two bunk rooms added when the station was expanded is now home to Onondaga Community College student Jason Haas. He has free board in exchange for his service as a volunteer firefighter while he works on a degree in fire protection.
Haas, 19, a 2005 graduate of Canastota High School, said he has long been interested in the fire service.
"My whole family is involved" as volunteers in the Wampsville Volunteer Fire Department, he said. Haas began volunteering for Wampsville at age 16.
