DALLAS _ The Katrina disaster has shown how technology can keep companies running during a disaster. Unfortunately, it has also demonstrated the limits of computers and communications.

Many businesses in the afflicted area have been able to keep operating, at least on the Web. But communications networks have been slow to come back online, making it difficult to regroup. And companies' disaster recovery plans had some unforeseen gaps.

"As is always the case with contingency plans, you can't plan for all the contingencies," said Tom Oreck, president of New Orleans vacuum cleaner maker Oreck Corp.
