With over 23 million persons estimated to have CKD, it is a challenge to identify persons at risk and to intervene earlier in the course of CKD (NIDDK, 2005). This may preserve remaining kidney function and delay progression to CKD stage 5.
There are several types of CKD clinics that are utilized in the United States in order to meet this challenge. The screening clinic, such as the National Kidney Foundation's KEEP (Kidney Early Evaluation Program) identifies persons with CKD.
