Von Maur Inc., the stealth department store chain from Iowa that has operated virtually unnoticed in the Chicago area for more than a decade, is preparing to step into the limelight.
A throwback to the way department stores did business more than a century ago, Von Maur shuns advertising, avoids big sales and closes its stores on traditional retail blowout days such as the Fourth of July so employees can be with their families.
That's not exactly a formula for grabbing shoppers' attention.
