FORMBY'S coastline will become the UK's third national red squirrel refuge today.
The National Trust estate in the pinewoods will be surrounded by a three-mile "buffer zone" to prevent the spread of grey squirrels, which threaten to wipe out the endangered reds.
Throughout the zone, traps, pest control methods and gamekeeping are to be increased, while the public will be urged to report sightings of both species.
And a series of virus screenings are to be carried out by Liverpool University's veterinary department to gain an insight into the diseases killing off reds.
