Inadequate funding, not enough staff and overwhelming caseloads are stretching the capacity of services, and nurses and other clinicians are struggling to deliver care.

A new report on the state of the nation's mental health services to be released this month has revealed the sector is in disarray, with many people unable to access mental health services, and resources for acute and community care so diminished only those who are critically ill are able to receive attention.
The process of deinstitutionalisation, begun over a decade ago, has had disastrous consequences for the community, who all too often are finding the providers of care so under-resourced they are unable to provide even the most basic service.
