Sep. 12--TOKYO -- A government survey covering more than 20,000 household appliance makers in Japan showed Monday that 19 products currently manufactured by 14 firms contain asbestos, leading the companies to target developing alternative substances by the end of October.

The makers said there was no airborne diffusion of the fibrous cancer-causing material for 18 of the 19 items.

However, Bridgestone Cycle Co. said it has been investigating that possibility for the remaining product -- a bicycle equipped with handbrake components containing asbestos, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said.
