WELCOME to the smallest class in Birmingham. Year Two at St Thomas Church of England Primary School in Highgate, Birmingham, has seen just 12 pupils start the new term.
Yet, incredibly, it is not the tiniest class in the Midlands. Only one youngster enrolled in reception at Malvern Hills Primary School, Worcestershire, last week.
Shrinking birth rates among the 'Bridget Jones' generation have hit intake numbers in recent years, and the decline could force half-empty schools to close or merge.
