EVERY day, in Scotland, at least two people take their own lives, and another 7,000 a year need hospital treatment for deliberate selfharm.

Three-quarters of those who die by suicide have had no contact with mental health services in the year before their death.

Suicide has been, for years now, the commonest cause of death in young Scottish men, exceeding even road accidents.

The suicide rate is higher than the UK average and, indeed, the rate of increase in Scottish suicide is the highest in Europe.
