The guide leading my orientation tour through New Orleans on June 9, 2004, was blunt about the fragility of a city built below sea level.
We were passing through swampland drained for growing sugar cane in the 1800s that had become a neighborhood of upscale homes. A major storm could destroy everything around us, he said.
Those words came back to haunt me when hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and the floodwalls broke.
