Mike Kelley at Metro Pictures
Best known for assemblages featuring vintage stuffed animals, Mike Kelley strikes a practiced balance between nastiness and nostalgia. He achieves it not only in sculpture but in performances, books and drawings, all as crude as they are sharp. The new work in his recent show tilts toward the wicked, though the basic formula remains intact: we are led to examine the public language of introversion and to question applications of commercial culture to our deepest, or basest, wants and fears.
