Client/server computing is a little like teenage sex--everyone talks about it, few actually do it, and even fewer do it right. Nevertheless, many people believe client/server computing is the next major step in the evolution of corporate information systems.
In the client/server model, the application designer splits the information-processing and user-interface functions of a typical application and runs each on a separate platform. This contrasts with traditional host-based computing, where both processing and user-interface functions run on the host computer. It also differs from stand-alone personal computer (PC) applications.
