Discussions about the use of embryonic stem cells are taking on the heat and rhetoric of other national debates such as abortion. Beyond the finger-pointing, scientists are working on the problem with a most familiar tool: science.
The raging debate over the use of embryonic stem cells (ESCs) could be effectively sidestepped, if only "adult" (somatic) stem cells could behave the same way that embryonic stem cells behave. If adult stem cells could change into any kind of cell, would there be any need to use embryonic stem cells at all?
