Sep. 15--National Envelope Corp. of Long Island City, N.Y., closed its 110,000-square-foot factory in Earth City abruptly on Wednesday, putting 173 employees out of work.
The company cited "redundancy of operations" in the Midwest as the reason for closing the plant, which it opened in 1986 at 13871 Parks Steed Drive.
National bought the operation, then based in Vinita Park, in 1981, when it acquired Champion Envelope Co., said Marcy Kaiser, a lawyer with National.
Kaiser said National would offer jobs at other plants to some of the workers in Earth City and would assist others in finding new jobs. National's ...
