WASHINGTON, Sept. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Effective informed consent leads to safer healthcare. Informed consent is the process in which a doctor discusses with a patient the care that is being prescribed, including its potential complications and alternative treatments, so that the patient truly understands what is involved, and what are his or her choices. A new publication prepared by the National Quality Forum (NQF) will help doctors do a better job of getting informed consent.
