A Somalian family whose son died nearly three years ago while being arrested in Madison is entitled to a trial to determine whether police caused the death by using unnecessary force, a federal appeals court ruled Monday.

The 2-1 decision by a panel of the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago overturns a decision issued last year by U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb. She ruled that police did not act unreasonably as they worked to handcuff Jamal Mohamed, 21, while trying to arrest him after he acted erratically on University Avenue.
