WAYNE ROONEY was sent off in Manchester United's goalless draw with Villarreal last night - and Sir Alex Ferguson refused to defend him.
Rooney was dismissed midway through the second- half of the Champions League clash after sarcastically applauding referee Kim Milton Nielsen's decision to book him for a foul on Villarreal captain Quique Alvarez.
Ferguson said: 'I think Wayne reacts to injustice a bit. He thought it was a wrongful booking but you cannot applaud the referee. I thought at first he had been sent off for putting his hand on the referee's arm but it was for clapping.
