THOSE who stepped on to the set of Channel 4's new period drama Elizabeth I say it was like stepping into a time machine. The director of the two-parter about the life of Queen Elizabeth I, played by Helen Mirren, wanted to take the viewer on a "virtual reality tour of the past".
And it looks like he may have achieved just that.
With a rumoured pounds 5.5 million budget for the programme, the palace set was built to the same scale and ground plan as the original.
