The government is frantically rushing through a major economic package in a bid to prevent a rerun of the four days of price rise riots which hit the country in mid-December, leaving at least 13 dead. The political crisis seems sure to linger on, however. Prime Minister Haider Abu Bakr al-Attas has tendered his resignation, and relations between the two ruling parties have reached their lowest ebb since unification. There are also fears the country's tribal leaders could intervene to restore order if the demonstrations continue.
