The composer Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) wrote: "Anyone who not seen the scenery which surrounds Interlaken (the Bernese Oberland) does not know Switzerland."
Switzerland, which is in the center of Europe, is land locked, but it can be traversed in one day in any direction from its borders with the countries of France, Germany, Liechtenstein, Austria, and Italy. Using a network of motorways, an efficient rail system which connects with "postbuses," and mountain railways which quickly transport one into the heartland of the Alps, it is easily accessible.
