A major car company is planning putting up a hybrid car production in the country for exports to the region amid government plans to relax tariffs to encourage the use and commercialization of alternative fuel sources.

Trade and Industry Undersecretary Elmer C. Hernandez said the project proponent is seriously considering assembly operations here.

Hernandez, however, did not disclose the identity of the company but said the Committee on Tariff and Related Matters (CTRM) is supporting the project subject to study by the Department of Energy.

At present, Switzerland is offering tax rebates on the production and assembly of hybrid cars.
