M&M: The facts on Medicare and Medicaid.(Regional News)

Medicare and Medicaid are programs about which many people may become familiar -- either as the programs apply to themselves or to a loved one. Many people confuse the programs and misunderstand their benefits, perhaps exposing them to financial risk at a time of health crisis.

First, let us distinguish between the two programs. Medicare is a federally-funded program which is provided to persons over 65 years of age who receive Social Security. Medicare has no financial thresholds to be met.
