For most of human history, our ancestors survived by eating the plants and animals that they could wrest from their own immediate environments. Nutrition per se was not their problem. To keep themselves alive, they ate what they could find in the natural world - learning, perhaps, over time to search for certain "nutritious" foods.

Of the products filling our grocers' shelves today, it is those with the least obvious relationship to the Earth that profit their manufacturers the most.
