FISHERIES: EP COMMITTEE STANDS BY BALTIC DRIFTNET BAN.

The Committee's vote was immediately applauded by the International Fund for Animal Welfare. IFAW campaigner Ursula Woodburn said the MEPs' move is "a stand for the protection of the critically endangered Baltic Harbour porpoise". "It is thought that this harbour porpoise population could be extinct in as little as 20 years if urgent action is not taken to prevent their deaths in fishing gear", she said.
