This article explores the features of privileged literacy development in the preschool years for children aged 3-5 years, and raises questions about universal, normative views of literacy development for all children. The article focuses on privileged literacy development where the dispositions, aspirations and expectations at home and at school connect. The multiple features of what amounts to privileged literacy development are gleaned from case studies of preschoolers in a private early childhood centre and at home with their families.
