Matt Hale never heard of Todd Philcox.

But as a backup quarterback who first saw the field in mop-up duty against Buffalo, Hale should hope one day to conclude his Syracuse career in Philcox fashion.

The latter had never completed a pass, his primary duty being that of the holder, when he became Dick MacPherson's starting QB in 1988 following the departure of three-year starter Don McPherson. In his career-in-a-year as Orange QB, Philcox completed 60 percent of his passes, throwing for over 2,000 yards and 16 touchdowns in a 10-win season capped by a victory over LSU in the Hall of Fame Bowl.
