Q. What kind of mulch can I use between my bearded iris to control weeds? - Bonnie Blevins, Virginia Beach.
A. You never mulch bearded iris if you want to keep them healthy. Mulch causes iris rhizomes to rot. I seemed to remember that some weed control products can be used to safely eliminate weeds in iris, so I called Bea Rogers, past president of the Tidewater Iris Society, who lives in Suffolk.
She referred to her American Iris Society yearbook, which says Preen can be used, but use it very lightly or the rhizome can be harmed. You've probably seen Preen advertised since it is usually available in garden centers.
