Further to the report in the October 1992 issue of the Tea & Coffee Trade Journal of the effects of the drought in East and Central Africa, tea and coffee production in the region is still suffering from problems, some of which are man-made.
Kenya
From Nairobi, it is reported that Kenya's coffee and tea industries are in disarray due to late payments to growers and a change to a new auction system which was meant to benefit farmers.
Sources within the industries state that farmers are angry because they have not been paid millions of dollars by state marketing boards and this could depress production still further.
