WIESENTHAL'S QUEST FOR JUSTICE
There is a difference between vengeance _ "an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth" _ and seeking justice. Vengeance is hateful, driven by a desire to bring as much pain on your attackers as they visited on you. It is impulsive, a reaction built into human nature. Vengeance can be justified _ as in cases of terrorism when only a prompt response is likely to deter further attacks _ but it seldom has power to alter history.
If anyone had a right to pursue vengeance, it was Simon Wiesenthal, who died Tuesday in Vienna at age 96. He lost ...
