Downturn will test new real estate agents.

Sep. 21--For six years, Jeff Wiren worked 60 hours a week managing a sales staff of 100 for a Coca-Cola bottler, and he did well as sole provider for his Sherwood-area family of four.

By last year, however, he had had enough. Wiren, 31, wanted to be a more frequent presence at the dinner table. He also wished to stay in a challenging business field -- but with more flexibility.

The booming Portland-area real estate business beckoned. Wiren had a hunch that by applying habits he gained in the corporate world -- namely, financial discipline and persistent marketing -- he could make a strong agent. So, he took the dive.
