This collection of essays originated in a conference held at the Henry Moore Institute in Leeds, and it is the first in a new series entitled 'Subject/Object: New Studies in Sculpture', edited by Penelope Curtis, director of the institute. It proved impossible to publish all the papers given at the conference, so further ones have been commissioned.
