In 1949, the United States Government sent an industrial quality expert to Japan as part of a post-war reconstruction effort. The individual, J. Edwards Deming, introduced revolutionary practices that helped Japan become a superstar in the manufacturing world. At the time, Deming had few followers closer to home. However, when Japanese cars started to appear in North American driveways, Detroit got the message, and the lean manufacturing revolution spread to factories in the U.S. and Canada. Today, the quality methods derived from Deming's principles are used in factories across the developed world.
