James Farmer, long-time leader in the struggle for civil rights and founder of the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE), recently was feted by politicians and activists during a celebration in Washington, D.C., marking his 73rd birthday.

Paying tribute to Farmer were former Georgia State Sen. Julian Bond and actress-singer Melba Moore, who served as hosts for the affair.

District Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly, Virginia Gov. L. Douglas Wilder and Maryland Gov. William Donald Schaefer offered proclamations declaring the date James Farmer Day.
