Sep. 22--San Antonio-based Valero Energy Corp. curtailed production in Texas City and Houston and other major refiners began to close plants near Houston as Hurricane Rita churned across the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday.
Rita threatens Texas' refinery-rich arc, stretching from the Louisiana border to Corpus Christi. The area represents about one-fourth of the nation's refining capacity.
The nation's oil industry is still struggling to deal with the effects of Hurricane Katrina: Four refineries remain closed.
