SALT LAKE CITY _ On the main thoroughfare that winds from downtown through the University of Utah's hillside campus, a left turn at 1300 East leads to the entrance of Rice-Eccles Stadium. A right leads to a cemetery.
The Air Force Falcons didn't intend to come here Thursday for a burial, but their 38-35 loss in front of 41,935 fans and a national television audience turned into what might have been a very public funeral.
The Falcons, now 2-2 after a 2-0 start, didn't merely say good-bye to their realistic hopes of a Mountain West Conference championship, they threw a lot of optimism into the casket with it.
