RECENTLY, I attended the wedding of a neighbour that exemplifies London.
The bride was the Britishborn daughter of a Pakistani Muslim father and a Christian Greek-Cypriot mother, the groom was white English. The music was Greek folk, the drink was Pimms, and the food samosas and roast beef.
One of the Muslim guests turned to me and, pointing to the newlyweds, said darkly: "I worry about their children. They won't have a clue who they are."
The answer, I replied, was self-evident: they would be Londoners. In this diverse city, who would fit in more easily?
