CEBU CITY, Sept 23 Asia Pulse - Mango growers in the Visayas will now have the chance to export their products to the United States with the acquisition of an irradiation facility.
Virgie de la Fuente, chairperson of the Visayas Chamber of Mango Industry Multipurpose Cooperative (VCMIMPC), said the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has approved a US$3.5 million grant that will help mango growers in the region avail of an irradiation facility to disinfect and kill pests, such as fruit flies and weevils.
The USDA requires Philippine mangoes to go through the irradiation process before they are shipped to the US. Currently, the US only accepts mango ...
