GORDON BROWN will today try to strike a vital balance in a key speech to ensure he takes over from Tony Blair as prime minister.
With the leadership almost within his grasp, he will reassure Blairites that he will protect the PM's New Labour legacy.
But the Chancellor must also try to keep his traditional allies in the trade union movement on board.
