Originally conceived by John Stevens in 1850 as a planned community, Mount Vernon has grown into a densely populated and vibrant city complete with rapidly expanding commercial districts. A new retail complex on East Sandford Boulevard includes chain retailers like Target, Bed Bath & Beyond and TJ Maxx.
The Latin inscription on the city seal of Mount Vernon translates as "The City of Happy Homes," and the Mount Vernon Hospital and recreational areas provide services which make the residents happy.
