Since its inception in 1731 as Canaan Parish, New Canaan has evolved from a religious community to a town built on shoe manufacturing to an affluent residential haven. Much of this evolution is credited to the arrival of the railroad in 1868. Wealthy New York City residents were quick to realize the charm of the quiet town and established it as a summer getaway spot with elegant vacation homes.
