Sep. 26--BAGHDAD -- U.S. and Iraqi soldiers clashed with gunmen loyal to Shiite cleric Moqtada Sadr early Sunday, trading fire in a long-running gun battle that broke nearly a year of calm between U.S. soldiers and militiamen in the Shiite slums of Sadr City.
The fighting in the densely populated neighborhood of eastern Baghdad and insurgent attacks across the country left about 30 people dead.
Eight people, including some al-Mahdi Army soldiers, were killed in the fighting in Sadr City, Iraqi officials said. A spokesman for Sadr put the death toll at four.
